Nestled on a windswept hilltop overlooking the wild Cornish coastline and the Altantic Ocean beyond, Southwestern Distillery is a true throwback to the traditional techniques of old-school distilling and craftmanship.
Established in 2012 by Tarquin Leadbetter (back when he was merely 23 years old) this is no ordinary establishment. We’re incredibly proud to call ourselves the first Cornish distillery for over 100 years. As a tiny, fully-independent, family-run business we at SWD like to celebrate the fact that we do things a little bit differently.
We still heat our 150 litre copper pot stills, Tamara and Senara, using a direct naked flame (our trusty paella burners) and even seal the top of each still with bread dough. These antiquated, somewhat maverick techniques are completely unheard of nowadays, but we’ve never been fans of convention. The results however are spirits that have been crafted with the upmost care, consideration and constant monitoring.
Our three permanent product lines:
TARQUIN'S CORNISH GIN (GOLD medals at the IWSC 2014 & San Francisco 2016. First Cornish Gin for 100 years.)
A contemporary take on a classic London Dry, we use fragrant handpicked Devon violets and fresh orange, lemon and grapefruit zest to deliver an wonderfully crisp, aromatic sensation.
Nose – Fresh, crisp and vibrant juniper. Light aromatic spice, orange blossom and a hint of cardamom. Body – Creamy, dry with delicate green pine and subtle frangipane. Finish – Crisp and clean, with lingering floral notes.
CORNISH PASTIS, the UK's first pastis (DOUBLE GOLD medal at the San Francisco World Spirits awards 2016. 5/5 Diffords Guide)
Aniseed, Fennel seed & Liquorice root provide the back-bone. No added sugar at all - slight sweetness comes from foraged gorse flowers from the Atlantic clifftops and the balanced with fresh orange zest to deliver its invigorating and unique aroma.
Nose – Honey, freshly picked garden herbs. Earthy and aromatic. Body – Rich, creamy and citrusy. Finish – Sweet-yet-dry and silky smooth.
TARQUIN'S NAVY 'SEADOG' GIN 57% -
We use exactly the same 12 botanicals as in our flagship Tarquin's Gin - but with heavier weights and cut with less water to take it to 57% vol. The result is a bold gin with warm spice balanced with plenty of freshness from the fresh citrus zests and floral notes at the end from the violet flowers.
Post distillation every single one of our bottles that leaves the distillery has been filled, waxed, stamped and labelled by hand and then personally signed and given batch tasting notes by Tarquin himself. No corners are cut, no machines used, and no quality compromised. When we put ‘Handcrafted in Cornwall’ on our bottles – we really do mean it.
