Excellent, Explosive and Eloquent: the Line-Up of BCB Side Events
It is the daily challenges but also role-model showcases that the Bar Convent Berlin programme of lectures is all about. For three days eight stages will present over 120 hours of knowledge transfer, expert panels, exchange of experience and tasting with culinary delights guaranteed. On top of this, visitors to BCB 2019 from 7 to 9 October can look forward to extraordinary speakers.
On behalf of BCB Angus Winchester, as Global Director of Education of the worldwide BCB trade shows is once again curating the programme of supporting events. This renowned “drinks experts” has been active in the bar business for 30 years now. A bartender, instructor and passionate consultant he says: “You never meet as many creative minds under one roof as you do here. And this is why I am extremely proud of our list of speakers this year.”
Dangerous and Illegal Ingredients
The Main Stage in Hall 5 forms the centrepiece of the programme of accompanying events. There visitors will meet Stephanie Simbo, for example. A renowned feminist she is an experienced bartender and holds both a WSET Qualification Level 3 and an Authentic Rum Certificate. She aims to introduce a social component to the world of spirits. At BCB she will discuss how former prison inmates can be incorporated into bar operations. The handling or abvoidance of dangerous and illegal ingredients and techniques will be explained by Camper English. This author has just recently been ranked 39th among the most influential people in the beverage industry 2019 worldwide. Jeffrey Morgenthaler is a bar operator and book author who will be speaking about how much ground has been covered to reach the current state of play in bartending. Exploring bartending on the basis of one’s identity, sourcing and a reponsible ethos will be centrestage for Vijay Mudaliar. This bar operator always focuses on local character – even at his own bar where everything from the ingredients and tableware to the furnishings are local and come from the surrounding region.
Samples at the Demonstration Bars
At the Demonstration Bars expert speakers and brand ambassadors from all over the world will offer spirits tastings and cocktail demonstrations as well as a practical take on exciting subjects related to various brands of relevance to daily operations. Speakers here include Alex Kratena, a multiple award-winning bartender and co-founder of the non-profit organisation P(OUR), and the spice expert Erwan de Kerros. As co-presenters they will elucidate how they see pepper and its varieties and how it adds the right spicy flavour to cocktails. Javier de las Muelas is the expert when it comes to taste optimisations. With the support of Schweppes, he – as one of the world’s best-known Cocktail Masters – will show visitors how to take any cocktail to the next level.
Inviting visitors to a trip to Greece will be world-famous Rum and Cocktail Influencer Thanos Prunarus, winner of the Greek World Class 2013 Thodoris Pirillos and bar owner and gin specialist Dimitris Kiakos. They will explain how they joined forces with a group of ten Greek bartenders to re-invent the drink tsipouro in the form of O/PURIST supporting a non-profit organisation in the process.
A Trip to Mauritius
Golden beaches, blue lagoons, breathtaking reefs and full-bodied rum: Mauritius is this year’s guest country at Bar Convent turning the Kühlhaus into a “House of Rum” – hosted by Ian Burrell. He was nominated International Brand Ambassador of the Year seven times, declared a Guinness World Record Holder and serves as a jury member for competitions on seven continents. “Rum is not just a beverage but a way of life,” he says. This message is also the recurring theme for the programme on the Rum Stage, where he will talk about the specificities of Madeira Rum and the secret to the double-ageing process. Matt Pietrek, one of the most notable authors in this industry, describes his quest for high ester rum, a special form of rum predominantly manufactured in Jamaica. Maggie Campbell, founder of the Denver Brewer’s League and Vice President of the Spirits Judging Committee, will talk about the “élevage craft”, a process applied by rum distillers all over the world to bring “excellence” to the glass.
Wine & Spirit Education Trust
The WSET Forum invites visitors to embark on a voyage of discovery into the world of spirits. WSET Product Development Manager for Spirits and Sake Nick King offers a special tasting of gin, agave spirit and Baijiu in various categories before Natsuki Kikuya, as Sake Samurai, sommelier and instructor, describes how to start a career with Japanese rice wine. Pawel Gruntowsky, founder of the Berlin Wine School, unveils the secrets of sherry while Liam Scandrett organises a cross-category blind tasting to understand the scaling, techniques and descriptors of the systematic WSET approach. The courses and exams for wines and spirits offered by the global organisation WSET are recognised as an international education standard the world over.
Know-How for Business
Park Street University is a partner of the BCB and the Business Forum in Hall 5 with its programme is aimed at trade fair visitors who want to expand their business or their own skills. In an expert panel Jaap Kras will provide an overview of the flourishing cannabis business and the associated cross-over products and trends. A former lawyer from the Netherlands he is one of the world’s leading landscaping specialists and an international consultant for the emerging cannabis industry in the European Union. In a panel discussion Gabe Barkley will explain why there is more to communicating luxury products than price. He will discuss with participants how experience and targeted focus make for successful communication. As the CEO of beverage importer and distributor as well as licensed service provider MHW he presents first-hand knowledge. Learning from the biggest mistakes of the beverage industry will be the topic dealt with by Louis de Rohan, who looks back on 20 years of experience related to building consumer brands in the beverage industry. Shilen Patel is the co-founder of Non-Alc-Lead and his talk describes how and why his company became successful on a global scale. He has already helped dozens of start-ups reach their full potential by asking provocative questions and introducing convincing strategies.
One bean, 1,000 flavours
Those wishing to find out how coffee can be successfully incorporated into their own bar concept will receive background information and illustrative examples through the lecture programme on the Coffee Stage in Hall 4. This forum is about imparting basic knowledge such as the use of espresso as an ingredient in coffee drinks, but also about inspiration. Timon Kaufmann will explain how to mix the perfect cocktail with coffee. He is considered one of the leading experts for coffee in combination with cocktails. A sensorial appreciation of coffee and spirits will come care of the talk between Timon Kaufmann, Reinhard Pohorec, Hannes Fendrick and Nicole Battefeld. “Cascara – the banned ingredient” will be the theme addressed by Romyna Robledo y Mendez. Next to coffee, tea is also being increasingly appreciated in bars. Explaining how to create tea-infused cocktails will be Raymund Peters while Ali Vogel – the “Latte Art Champion” will talk about the art of milk foam as an eye-catcher for bars.

This year sees BCB being held over three days for the second time now. This will allow more interested parties to attend the event. There will only be 1-day tickets available to make it easier to control and spread visitor streams. Those wanting to visit the trade show on two or three days will benefit from discounted ticket prices. Since its founding in 2007, Bar Convent Berlin has emerged as one of the leading international trade shows for the bar and beverage industry. Every October, the who’s who of the German and European bar and beverage industry meet in Berlin to establish new contacts, catch up on the latest product innovations and attend education seminars. In 2019 the trade show will be held from 7 to 9 October at Station Berlin and Kühlhaus. About 14,000 trade visitors are expected to attend.
