We at Kinsale Mead Co produce award-winning, world-class Irish meads in our state-of-the-art meadery on the Atlantic coast in County Cork where we couple traditional recipes with modern wine-making techniques in our family run business.
What is Mead? It’s the world’s oldest alcoholic drink, fermented from honey. You may know it as Nectar of the Gods, Met or Honigwein, Hydromiel, Mede or even Honey Wine.
They’re also popular with mixologists in a range of cocktails – Mead Negroni, Sangria and low alcohol, fruity cocktails.
Atlantic Dry Mead
This embodies the modern, refined style of mead making. A traditional style mead made from raw orange blossom honey. Finished off dry and matured for 12 months, it’s citrus and crisp rather than sweet with a lingering honey finish.
Awards include 2 star Great Taste Award and International Mazer Cup Gold
Serve: Enjoy chilled or over ice with an orange garnish 12% ABV
Cocktail: Bees Knees - Atlantic Dry Mead, premium gin, lemon juice and honey syrup
Food Pairing: Lovely with almonds, seafood and oysters or with a lemon tart or light goats cheese
Wild Red Mead
Forest honey fermented off dry with tart Irish blackcurrants beautifully balanced with dark cherries then matured for 2 years. Packed full of flavour, it’s an intriguing alternative to full-bodied red wines, delivering on smooth fruitiness with soft tannins.
Awards include Gold Blas na hEireann
Serve: Enjoy on its own at a cool room temperature 12% ABV
Try mulling with gentle spices and honey for a warming, winter drink
Food Pairing: Great paired with tapas, sticky barbecue ribs, strong cheese or rich, dark chocolate
Hazy Summer Mead
Fabulous, fruity, off-dry berry mead with generous strawberry and raspberry aromas, a juicy burst of ripe summer berries. Strawberries and raspberries on the nose, blackberries, blackcurrants and cherries with a subtle blueberry and honey finish.
Awards include Gold at Blas na hÉireann and International Mazer Cup Gold
Serve: Lightly chilled or over ice or frozen berries 11% ABV
Cocktail: Mead Sangria – Hazy Summer Mead, Cointreau, cranberry juice and fresh lime juice over ice with an orange slice.
Food Pairing: Delicious with spicy chicken wings and cold meats or berry pavlova or blue cheese
All bottles 70cl. Mead is generally classified as the same as still wine in terms of duty and alcohol sales licences. In Ireland we sell in 200 high end supermarkets, speciality food stores, cocktail bars and restaurants and we are starting to sell in the UK.
We have seen strong interest from millennials looking for new experiences, from foodie types and particularly female white wine and craft gin drinkers, who all love the uniqueness of this lovely drink, the natural flavours and artisan process.
For many people today, drinking a glass of this modern, refined mead will be a new experience. But that’s what it’s all about; we’re all looking for those moments of discovery and joy.
