Who’s behind SODA LIBRE?
Hands on and minds open! This is something of a mission statement for Thorsten Husmann and René Machon, who, with many years of international experience in the drinks industry, set up SODA LIBRE in spring 2017. Thorsten had long wondered why so few sodas were used as mixers. After all, the perfect, sparkling sweet & sour mixer would also have to work for long sour drinks.
After countless samples, his own experiments and creations, the initial concept was born. Driven by the desire to liberate the world from boring, standard mixers, Thorsten and René set about making their idea a reality. Right from the beginning, they had several types of soda in mind. Their first decision was to opt for a basil and lemon flavour: the soda’s unusual colour and its innovative long drink concept are its defining characteristics.
With Eloy Gut on board as a third partner, the two entrepreneurs were joined by an equally enthusiastic and experienced expert in the food retail sector. After just over two years, the three founders presented their first soda at Bar Convent in Berlin in 2017. The Basil is SODA LIBRE’s first product – more soda innovations are to follow.
SODA LIBRE’S first coup
Bravery now has a refreshingly bittersweet, basil flavour. Unconventional and innovative, SODA LIBRE is focused on one thing above all: having a feel for the right time and a unique taste! While searching for a soda that was not only refreshing but also a suitable mixer for the bar business, the Hamburg trio happened across great basil, a member of the mint family. Basil’s sweet and peppery taste and green colour makes it the ideal soda ingredient. On its own, chilled and garnished with a fresh basil leaf and a slice of lemon, The Basil not only looks cool but also tastes wonderfully refreshing.
The sparkling soda is also the perfect mixer for long drink fans. Bartenders are impressed by the balanced mix of sweet and sour and its effervescent character. The Basil is the ideal complement to all drinks, showcasing them perfectly: combined with gin, tequila or vodka, as a spritz with prosecco on ice, The Basil is a byword for aromatic refreshment in a long drink.
