Berlin Nights: The Bar Events at the BCB 2021

From proven classics to mysterious speakeasies in various parts of the city: the BCB’s evening events bring fascinating constellations of people together in Berlin’s bars. 

 

“You’re crazy, child – you should go to Berlin.” One hundred years ago, this was Berlin’s unofficial slogan, and this belief continues to draw people to the city on the Spree river today.

The 1920s in particular were synonymous with freedom, art, culture, joie de vivre, eccentricity and ‘Dance on the Volcano’. This is the fascination of Berlin. With its ‘City Life Spirits’ concept, the Bar Convent Berlin is returning a spirit of exuberance and creativity and glasses filled with exquisite creations to the city for magical and breathtaking Berlin nights.

That is because our popular BCB event does not end when the show closes. Everyone is called upon to discover the city's bars – from proven classics to mysterious speakeasies in various parts of the city. Always part of the action: fascinating guests from renowned bars all over the globe who are bringing liquid inspiration from their home countries to Berlin’s bars. International inspiration is imbued with the spirit of Berlin to create a special evening at each bar that is headlined by an exciting collaboration and a special theme. What better way could there be to explore the crazy city that is Berlin.

Urban Gardening in the ‘Velvet’ Bar

The award-winning bar in the Neukölln district of Berlin is playing host to the team from Moscow’s ‘Inside’ bar. The ‘Inside’ bar team will be arriving a few days in advance to join forces with the ‘Velvet’ crew so that they can create a special menu and gather the fresh ingredients they will be using. We are all familiar with the ‘Velvet’ bar’s focus on urban gardening, the city's rich variety of plant life, regionality and the seasons, and the ways in which these factors influence the special drinks on offer on any given evening. This time there will also be a captivating slice of Russia added to the mix. The official partner for this evening is Brown-Forman, with a focus on Fords Gin.

Quality time in the ‘Provocateur’

The ‘Provocateur’ bar has dedicated itself to the motto of the 1920s and is a celebration of Berlin and Paris during that era. What better place for the international bar community to come together for a celebration of their community and its legends. Cosmopolitan vibes and exquisite drinks from throughout Europe await us both in front of the bar and behind it. Bar manager Tarek Nix and his excellent team have invited an array of outstanding guests. On Tuesday, the ‘Himkok’ bar will be bringing a liquid slice of its Norwegian homeland to Berlin. Its drinks feature Aquavit, vodka and gin from its own distillery. From Paris, the Danico Bar – opened by Nick de Soto – will be bringing various bold and inspiring cocktails. And on Monday, the brave and chaotic ‘Two Schmucks’ bar is taking the diversity of Barcelona’s Raval district with it to the tranquil Wilmersdorf area. These special evenings will enjoy the support of Maison Ferrand with Pierre Ferrand Cognac, Citadelle Gin and Plantation Rum.

Metropolis at night in the ‘Wax on Wax Off’

Two mysterious doors join to create a mysterious night. The legendary French establishment ‘Little Red Door’ is a guest in the Neukölln district. This Parisian bar, whose themed menus have always been sure to enchant and impress in equal measure, and which is reached through tiny, closely guarded red doors, will be meeting with Sam Orrock, Berlin’s own eccentric bar enthusiast. It was only in September 2020 that Sam received the keys to his speakeasy, where he has created an idiosyncratic collection of devices and equipment with which he conjures up his drinks. In addition to his bottled cocktails, it is now possible to visit him at the bar in person for an answer to a pressing question: what exactly do those famous words of wisdom – “Wax on, wax off” – from the film ‘The Karate Kid’ mean?

The very long nights that are being planned are supported by Noilly Prat.

Sustainability in the ‘House of Gin’ – ‘Stay Gold’

The elegant ‘Stay Gold’ bar in the Palace Hotel recently celebrated its third anniversary with laid-back DJ sets and a selection of 150 gins. For one evening, the ‘House of Gin’ will serve as a stage for Max Venning from London. He and his brother Noel operate the ‘Three Sheets Bar’ in the city on the Thames river. The bar, located in the trendy nightlife district along Kingsland Road in Dalston, boasts an understated elegance and serves tremendous drinks on its white marble tables featuring designs that range from slightly tipsy (one sheet to the wind) to seriously inebriated (three sheets to the wind). This is coupled with a concept emphasising sustainability and the use of leftover ingredients to create alternative sours and clever pre-batching. That is the concept that awaits patrons at the bar located in the shadow of the Gedächtniskirche church. The official partner for this evening is Bacardi with Bombay Sapphire.

Senses in the ‘Green Door Bar’

We must trust our senses. The bar manager of the legendary ‘Green Door Bar’ is famous in Berlin for the care she takes with every detail of her drinks creations. She is collaborating with Jad Ballout from the ‘Dead End Paradise’ in Beirut to create an exciting drinks concept that challenges bar patrons to put all their senses to the test – and to trust what they reveal. Smelling, touching, tasting – it is only by using all the senses that this extraordinary enterprise can come to fruition.

Jad Ballout is the bartender who put Beirut on the cocktail map. His former bar, ‘Electric Bing Sutt’, fell victim to the horrific explosion in the Port of Beirut in August 2020. Now he is coming to Berlin from his new bar and bringing his optimism and outstanding drinks with him. This evening will be supported by Brown-Forman’s elegant whisky portfolio and its Woodford Reserve, Slane and Benriach brands.

‘La Grande Finale’: Visitors from Paris in the ‘Black Rabbit’

Fully in keeping with the motto ‘Saving the best for last!’, the ‘Black Rabbit’ has decided to dedicate Tuesday and Wednesday evening to a collaboration with the ‘Le Mary Celeste’ from Paris and sponsor Schweppes to treat their patrons to TWO unforgettable nights. ‘Le Mary Celeste’, a French hotspot in the City of Love, is known both for its ingenious ‘aperitif style’ cocktails and for its oysters – making it perfect for the evening’s theme: food pairing. What foods make the best taste combinations with which drinks? – All of us who want to discover the answer will find it in the ‘Black Rabbit’ brunch and cocktail bar.
